Testimonials

Through constant and repetitive work in the hospitality industry I had developed a sharp and lingering pain in my left shoulder. After mixed results from several physios I decided to undertake the student clinic at the school. The course helped me become more aware of my body, how it should move and how I could relieve pain. My discomfort has now all but gone and by applying the simple principles I can prevent it from recurring.

The Alexander Technique

The Alexander Technique teaches you how to become more co-ordinated, improve your posture, muscle tone, ease of movement, flexibility, balance and breathing. It is applicable to all activities in life and has many health benefits.

Who needs it? Can it help me?

Anyone can learn to apply the Alexander technique to their daily lives as well as to sports, hobbies, musical performance, public speaking and so on. There is documented evidence to support its positive effect on back pain and can help relieve other aches, pains, RSIs, breathing problems, neurological disorders and poor posture.

How does it work?

Alexander technique works by teaching people to recognize their habitual patterns of tension, movement and thought and to restore the natural poise and balance of the body by focusing in particular on the relationship between the head and the spine.

What’s involved in a lesson?

Alexander technique teachers use both verbal direction and gentle manual guidance to encourage changes in movement in basic everyday activities. Loose fitting/easy to move in, sleeved clothes are all that’s required.

What do I need to do now?

Private lessons are 40 minutes in duration and can booked at your convenience.  Call us now on 03 9642 1122 to book in your first lesson and to ask our staff any questions you may have.  We look forward to seeing you soon.

Clinical Trials on the Alexander Technique

As the Alexander technique is a drug free approach to wellness, it has been difficult to get funding for clinical trials. However recently there has been a large clinical trial published in the British Medical Journal giving strong support for the efficacy of the Alexander technique in people with recurring chronic back pain. This study has shown that "lessons in the Alexander Technique led to important patient improvement in function, quality of life and reduction of days in back pain".

There is also a small trial on the efficacy of the Alexander technique with people with Parkinson's Disease. Whilst not having a large enough sample to be definitive, the trial gives promising indications of the technique's efficacy for people with this condition, and gives confirmation to the clinical experience of Alexander technqiue teachers and their clients in this area. A follow up study on participants in this trial has also been encouraging.
